Living Energy Dive into Spring!

Wednesday, 21 October 2009
Golden Bay High School in Takaka, home to a 350kW Binder boiler installed by Living Energy earlier this year, has just opened its pool to swimmers for the spring season.  First into his togs was our Engineering Manager, Mark Wiseman - a keen swimmer himself.  Mark was on site to supervise the process of switching the school's new woodchip-fired boiler over from its winter space heating duty at the school, to its spring and summer duty of keeping the community pool at a comfortable 28 degrees.

The state-of-the-art woodchip boiler replaced an ageing coal system that the school had been looking to replace with a diesel boiler.  Living Energy's expertise in wood-fired energy systems resulted not only in the installation of a boiler half the size of that specified in the tender documents, but also gave the school a way of heating their buildings and the pool for less than half the cost of diesel - delivering significant cost savings.

The project has also delivered significant carbon dioxide emissions savings, which on diesel would have resulted in 50 tonnes of emissions per annum.  On wood, this figure is reduced by around 90% when processing and transport are taken into consideration.
