Living Energy are delighted with the first-season performance of the six Binder wood chip boilers we installed in New Zealand schools earlier this year, with not a single fuel blockage in over 4,000 cumulative run hours - that's equivalent to half a year of continuous operation.
Sector Development Manager, Neil Harrison said :
"This is a great outcome, and shows the importance of specifying a robust fuel recovery and transfer system. Some of these boilers are the only woodchip systems for miles in any direction, so it's important that they're able to cope with the vagaries of an immature supply chain. The Binder systems offer robustness which is unrivalled in the marketplace, and both we and the schools are delighted with the performance".
The six boilers have a mixture of 220mm and 330mm augers, with the augers selected based on the reliability of local fuel supplies. At our Hokitika and Takaka sites, where these are the first (and currently only) wood chip systems in operation, 330mm augers allow the boilers to accept chip with a size classification of up to S100 under the draft New Zealand wood fuel standards. The 330mm augers and KA fuel agitator system are able to cope with very rough material, including oversize pieces that have more in common with firewood than wood chips!
The 220mm augers have coped equally well, with no blockages or other problems reported on the three boilers using this diameter of fuel feed system, thanks to the good quality fuel supplies that we've sourced on behalf of our clients.
